Raised by an abstract painter mother and architect father, Michelle Pressler experienced a childhood filled with drawing, building games, glitter, and gem collecting. After receiving a degree in fashion design, Michelle worked in the fashion industry as a designer and illustrator, while also teaching fashion design and illustration, history of costume, and color theory. But the allure of glittery elements lured her back to beads, in the form of hand sewn beaded and painted greeting cards and intricately hand sewn beaded leather Renaissance style book covers. The interest in jewelry grew out of this, and led to 7 years working for a well known jewelry company, as production artist, production manager, and then design assistant.
Michelle Pressler Jewelry was founded in 2002, combining her background and love of art and design. Each season’s collections are built like a clothing collection, with a new point of view, a new color palette, and mix and match styles. High quality gemstones in special cuts and colors are used like paints, to create ombre effects similar to watercolors and a rich color palette. The tiny semiprecious beads and pearls are wire threaded with complex techniques to reference pave settings, also resembling mosaics or cobblestones. With a range of styles from simple to elaborate, the pieces are meant to feel like delicate modern heirlooms. Inspiration comes from contemporary design, nature, and decorative details from all periods throughout history. Each piece is carefully hand made in her Philadelphia studio.
